Student Nurses Association Meeting Minutes

February 1, 2010

 

Grand Valley State University

I.                    Call to order at: The SNA meeting was called to order at 12:00 pm by Jessica Lerch, President.

 

II.        Roll Call:  The roll call was taken by Sally Hoekzema, Secretary.

IV.                Approval of Previous Meeting’s Minutes (01-18-10):

VI.     Officer Reports:

A.      President

            a. Committee sign-up was deferred until all other business is discussed.

            b. MNSA convention attendees were asked to please meet with Jessica Lerch, President, in the back of the room following the general meeting.

B.     Vice President

      a. The announcement was made that T-shirt orders will go out Monday, Feb. 8, 2010. One delegate volunteer from each class is asked to please distribute the order forms among their respective classes. These order forms will be due Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 by 5pm in CHS 305.

      b. A second fundraising announcement was made regarding the upcoming sale of KCON window clings and stickers on a separate order form.

C.     Secretary

      - A brief clarification of delegate duties and responsibilities was made, especially for the benefit of incoming NUR 315 and first time delegates.

      a. The announcement was made regarding KCON’s Relay for Life team, its need for more team members to sign up, and an incentive to raise $500.00 in pledges by Feb. 22, 2010 so that the American Cancer Society will match this team donation.

      b. It is requested that student continue to save and turn in medication vial caps for the badge reel fundraiser which will be sold among students and at the state (MNSA) convention.

G.    BTN Director

      a. A description of the reading project for elementary schools was given. The Young Explorers Human Body pop-up book will be the material used for this volunteer experience. The BTN Director, Megan Kaid, can be contacted for more information or with questions.

      b. Our BTN Director, Megan Kaid, will be running for the state board equivalent of her position on the GVSU SNA board. There are also additional MNSA board positions available including VP, Newsletter and Community Health. State meetings are held once per month and gas mileage is reimbursed. Please consider this opportunity. Also note that if  you serve on the state board, they help pay for national convention expenses.

H.     Website Coordinator

      a. The announcement was again made to please view the SNA website, www.gvsusna.com, and let Laura Haiderer, Website Coordinator know of any improvements that could be made.

      b. Also, the announcement was made that if any students are interested in starting an SNA sponsored initiative in the Heartside neighborhood, to please contact Laura as well.

J.    Evaluations

      - A sign-up sheet was passed around during the meeting for NUR 120 and NUR 220 presentation volunteers. Evaluations Director, Michelle Firlit, will provide the information you need to speak to theses upcoming nursing students. Please email her if you are interested but did not receive the sign-up sheet.

 

VII.          Additional Announcements

a. The flyer for NUR 315 student, Amanda Mujais’, donation drive for Ghana was presented. This drive is collecting medical equipment, supplies and textbooks for schools and hospitals in Ghana. There is a box in the lobby at CHS and in the Kirkhof Center. Please support this if you are able!

 

b. The announcement was made, and included in depth on the meeting minutes, about the film/discussion series “Unnatural Causes” to be hosted on Tuesdays from 12-1pm in 113 CHS. If you are interested, join this group to view a seven week series on racial and socioeconomic inequities in healthcare.

 

c. Each committee chairperson gave a short description of their committee, its time commitment and involvement. Committee sign-ups were held, beginning with NUR 450 students and working through those present, ending with NUR 315 students.

 

d. Three additional NUR 320 students were present who wished to become class delegates. Sally Hoekzema, Secretary noted the names of Sarah Pilgrim, Jennifer Sommers and Ayaka Yajima to be added to the NUR 320 delegate list and their paperwork to be obtained once appropriate delegate folders were given to them by Jessica Lerch, President.
